E-PROM REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE:  Please read the instructions in their entirety before replacing the chip.  If the instructions are not followed to the word, thus causing damage to the unit, the warranty on the unit will be voided.

NEVER set the E-prom chip on a metal surface.  This will cause damage to the chip!!

Follow these instructions to replace the HU-961 E-prom chip:

1.  Make sure that your unit says "HU-961 Ready" on the LCD screen before you unplug the unit.

2.  To remove the unit from the rack, you will need to unplug the power cube from the outlet, unplug the power from the unit, pull out the 12 pin strip I/O Connector and if you have your computer and printer plugged into Comm 1 and Comm 2, you will need to disconnect these, too.  Remove the top cover of the HU-961 by removing the 3 screws from the top of the unit.  Lift on each side of the cover to get the panel off.

3.  Locate the E-prom chip.  It is 1½" long the ½" wide.  The E-prom is marked HU-961 V1.0.  This is the E-prom chip that you will be replacing.  You may identify the E-prom chip that needs to be changed by the following:

  1. As you look at the HU-961 from the front panel, it is the back E-prom chip on the left.

4.  Before you remove this E-prom chip, note the location of the small indention on the left side of the E-prom chip.  At this time, pry gently on each side of the E-prom chip with a small screwdriver or E-prom chip remover.  Make sure that you are prying on the E-prom chip and not the E-prom socket.  Now carefully remove the E-prom from the socket remembering not to set the E-prom on a metal surface.

5.  You'll note that your new E-prom chip has a white identifier dabbed on it.  This identifier should be positioned on the left side of the E-prom socket, looking at it from the front panel.

6.  For further identification make sure that the dab is lined up with the C60 capacitor.  Place the new chip in the socket making sure that all pins are positioned in the socket properly.  If the pins are not lining up, you will need to slightly bend one side of the chip on a flat, non-metallic surface.  Once you are certain the pins are positioned correctly, press down firmly enough to seat the chip being careful not to exert too much pressure on the board.

7.  Please place the old chip in the plastic cover and then place it in the envelope in which you received the new E-prom and return to the HollyAnne Corporation.

8.  Replace the cover of the unit, plug the power into the back of the unit and then the power cube into the outlet.  Then watch the front panel.   The unit should say "HU-961 Ready" on the LCD display and the "Ready" light should stay solid green if you have correctly inserted the chip.   (Note:  Your "Alert" will flash red until you connect your I/O Connector.)

9.  Now, reprogram your unit following the instructions in your HU-961 manual.  Here are some helpful hints and items to note when reprogramming your unit:

  1. When you come to your "Station ID" window, the fifth digit or the digit following your four call sign letters must be a forward slash.  (Example:   KGRE/FM)

  2. For your "Origination Code" window, you are a Broadcast System

  3. When you come to your "Term" window where you pick the events that you want programmed, note that there are four terms that are listed that you do not want to program for.  They are the four events the FCC is concerned about and they are already pre-set in your unit.

They are:

  1. E.A.N. - Emergency Action Notification - Set for Priority 1.

  2. E.A.T. - Emergency Action Termination - Set for Priority 1.

  3. R.M.T. - Required Monthly Test - Set for Priority 1 in V1.4 chip.

  4. R.W.T. - Required Weekly Test - This test is meant to be transmitted by you, whenever you so desire.  Do Not retransmit an R.W.T.

Do Not put these four in your term list.  You may add up to sixteen terms of your own choice.

     d.  With each term, you have three action codes to choose from:

  • Enable Voice Announcement - If you "X" this one, it will allow the speaker on the front panel of the HU-961 to say "Hot Message", "Hot Message", etc., when one of the four FCC event codes, or one of the terms that you programmed is received.

  • Enable Output Message Control - I do not believe you will want to "X" this.  This allows the message but the message only of an event that you have programmed to go on the air immediately.

  • Enable Remote Alarm Output - An "X" in this box will enable Pin 2 on the HU-961.  This will allow you to wire up a light or bell to let you know that a message has come in.  It does not hurt to have this marked even if you are not using Pin 2.

NOTE:  Once the HU-961 has been programmed, you may disconnect your computer and your programming will stay forever.  However, if you have a power outage or a brown out, the time and date does drop off.  Once this occurs, you must reset the time and date.  You do not need to reconnect your computer to do this.  The time and date can be put back in from the front panel of the HU-961.   See Setting the Time and Date under Fixes for the HU-961.
